Join us as we celebrate Easter and explore its themes through design…
Easter eggs are an integral part of Easter celebrations around the world. The history of Easter eggs can be traced back to ancient pagan cultures where they were a symbol of new life and fertility. In many cultures, the egg represents the beginning of the universe and the source of all life.
This Mosaic Egg of 1914, part of HM Queen Elizabeth II collection, is inspired by a piece of petit point. They were made of precious metals such as gold and silver and adorned with gemstones and intricate enamel designs. They were often designed to open up and reveal a surprise inside, such as a miniature sculpture or a small treasure.
A common and natural way to decorate eggs is to use spring foliage from the garden. Leaves can be placed around the egg face-down and secured with thread. Then, the eggs can be dipped into dye for beautiful painterly results. Find our blog post Easter Crafts for more tips.
Our Rockin’ Robin light collection for Porta Romana always comes to mind when we think about themes of Easter. The glowing suspended porcelain eggs give off a warm light which emulates new beginnings. We have installed a large Rockin’ Robin ceiling light in the recently redesigned room 207 at The Soho Hotel.
Easter also invites the concept of hiding and finding. In our designs, we like to include moments of surprise through hidden details. In the Library at Haymarket Hotel you’ll find a tiny model of a house perched between the books if you look very carefully!
It’s no secret that we love to create tablescapes! It is important to incorporate some Easter classics when decorating a table. This adds an element of playfulness with the addition of a few bunnies, chicks and edible eggs. We’ve placed our decorative eggs in Mythical Creatures Egg Cups. Find all of our Easter tablescaping ideas here.
From all of us at our Design Studio, we wish you a very happy Easter!
At our hotels we are also getting ready for Easter where you can enjoy celebratory menus at our London and New York restaurants. We have been told that the ‘Easter bunny’ will be laying some eggs in the Drawing Room at The Soho Hotel for our youngest guests to find!
