We often think of design as something that happens to a room. But the spaces that feel best are those designed around the life already being lived in them. Join us as we share our thoughts on designing not for how a room should look, but for how it should feel to live in every single day.
Purpose
Every room begins with a question: how will this space actually be lived in? A room designed for quiet reading will be different from a living room built around gathering and conversation. Before considering colour, fabric or furniture, think through the purpose of the space.
Fabrics
Fabrics play an important role in designing spaces. They should not be chosen only for how they look, but for how they will feel after years of daily life. Choose a heavy weave and durable fabric for upholstery and lighter fabrics for curtains. A well chosen, durable fabric will soften over time, developing character and warmth that improves with use.
Light
Light is never still. It shifts with the hour, the season and the weather, and a room that feels open and expansive at noon can feel entirely different by late afternoon. Understanding where light enters, how it travels and when it fades is one of the most important and most often overlooked considerations. Think about high level lighting as well as low level lighting.
Layers
The most personal and considered interiors are rarely finished all at once. They are rooms that have grown and evolved alongside the people living in them. A piece added, a fabric changed, a furniture piece that tells the story of years. Designing with this in mind means building slowly over time with things that have meaning.
Comfort
A room should feel as good as it looks. The depth of a sofa or the height of a seat are the details that determine whether a space truly works. Consider cushions, textures and the way a room supports everyday living.
The rooms that stay with us are never the most perfect ones. They are the ones that feel considered and alive, where every choice has been made with care and with the person living there in mind.
