Featured in each and every one of our hotels and with its shapely silhouette adorning our logo, the mannequin has been with us from the very beginning and is now synonymous with Firmdale Hotels.
Its origins are humble and go back to the very first hotel that Tim and Kit Kemp bought – Dorset Square Hotel. Working with a shoestring budget, which didn’t yet extend to buying and framing pictures, Kit was looking for something that would add character and interest to each room. A mannequin introduced colour, pattern and height to a space, combining sculptural form with practical function to create a focal point and feature that was unique to Kit Kemp. It’s since become a signature part of every scheme, incorporating key fabrics and colours from the overall design of each space.
We’re always creating new schemes across our hotels and with each new room design there is, of course, a mannequin. With this in mind, we thought we’d bring together a few of our latest additions…
In Room 509 at The Soho Hotel, our Tea Trail fabric for Christopher Farr is used with the addition of an Ombre fringe belt – also by Christopher Farr – which we think is great fun! It’s also available to buy over on Shop Kit Kemp.
In Room 405 at The Soho Hotel the fabric on the mannequin is mirrored on the headboard and on the sofa cushions unifying the room. This fabric is called Yorkshire in the colourway Berry by Travers x Zimmer & Rhode.

Our mannequins make a fantastic addition at home too – whether in a bedroom, bathroom or hallway. Many of our designs are available to buy on Shop Kit Kemp and are handmade to order.
Crafted using traditional techniques, they feature a sustainable papier-mâché base made of recycled and FSC approved materials. Take a look at a few of our favourites….
Here in room 120 at the Soho hotel our mannequin features two fabrics with a red belt cinching the waist. The skirt is upholstered in Jamboree by Ellen Merchant which is echoed in the headboard, cushions and curtains. The top of the mannequin is upholstered in Wicker by Fermoie.
