As we welcome the dawn of a new space age, it has been our pleasure to welcome space traveller, Sir Richard Branson, to The Whitby Hotel.

On Sunday 11 July 2021 history was made. Sir Richard Branson successfully reached the edge of space on board his Virgin Galactic rocket plane that has been in development for 17 years.

In town to hold various meetings and press conferences at The Whitby Hotel following his flight, we presented him with a cocktail of our own invention to celebrate his amazing adventure into space: The Galactic Aviator at The Whitby Hotel.

Created by our own expert mixologists behind the bar at The Whitby Hotel, this twist on the classic aviator cocktail seemed particularly fitting as the cocktail’s history dates back to the early 1900s where it marked the dawn of 20th-century air travel. Now in 2021, a new era of air travel has arrived as Sir Richard Branson’s amazing feat saw him rocket 53 miles into the sky before safely returning to the ground one hour later.

Virgin Galactic is set to be brought to market next year for customers to experience space tourism first hand, but if you can’t wait until then for your own galactic experience, why not try our Galactic Aviator at The Whitby Hotel cocktail at home:

– 1.5 oz Saffron infused Perry Tot Gin
– 1 oz lemon juice
– ½ oz simple syrup
– ½ oz of Luxardo Maraschino Liquor
– 1 bar soon of Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao
– Dash of Burlesque Bitters

Shaken, double strained and served in a coupe with a lemon rind garnish, you won’t need a spaceship to follow in Sir Richard Branson’s footsteps on this occasion!
