In this week’s edition of our Sleeping Around series, we’re thrilled to give you an exclusive tour of one of our newly refurbished rooms at Dorset Square Hotel—room 101. This hotel holds a special place in our hearts, as it was the first Firmdale Hotel, opening its doors in 1985. Housed in an elegant Regency townhouse, the room boasts large floor-to-ceiling sash windows, flooding the space with natural light. This abundance of light has allowed us to experiment with a rich, deep red fabric on the walls, creating a cosy cocoon with its warm tones and tightly woven texture.
The focal point of the room is the oversized statement headboard and curtains, dressed in a stunning embroidered crewelwork fabric. To add a touch of sophistication, we’ve included nickel studs on the upholstery. We’ve played with different scales of studding, using larger, more widely spaced studs on the headboard to introduce a modern flair, while still maintaining the room’s classic charm.
We’ve used the same fabric on the curtains, where the undulating vines of flora and fauna stretch across the space, accentuating the room’s high ceilings and expansive windows. While the design is rooted in tradition, its vibrant colour palette brings a fresh energy to the room. A sunny yellow end-of-bed stool adds a cheerful and uplifting touch, perfectly complementing the warm tones throughout the space.
We love to combine floral patterns with geometric elements and in this room, we’ve paired the organic flow of the crewelwork with the structure of our Jogalong woven striped fabric, designed for GP & J Baker. The striking colours and delicate running stitch embroidery make it a memorable addition to the armchairs and desk chair, creating an intriguing visual contrast.
The devil is in the details, and it’s not just the fabrics that have been thoughtfully curated in this room. The artwork and mirrors have been carefully selected to elevate the overall scheme without overpowering it. Fun frames, particularly those in this room, pay tribute to craftsmanship, featuring intricate wood carving that adds an extra layer of interest.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this glimpse into this new room at Dorset Square Hotel. We can’t wait to welcome you soon!
