Room 1408 at The Whitby Hotel in Midtown Manhattan features a bespoke headboard and cushion combination that is the focal point of the room.
The scene was inspired by an illustration on the top of an old black lacquered box. It features a Huntsman in a woodland which Japanese artist Kumi has replicated with appliquéd and embroidered remnants of vintage kimono fabrics onto a dark wool.
The bold headboard design and patterned fabrics in the room are set against a neutral fabric walling by Decortex, so the room doesn’t feel overly busy.
When using such an array of bold patterns, it is important that they are of a similar language and varying scales. Minimising the colour variation creates a dialogue between the fabrics, creating a harmonious scheme.
There is a thread of colour between the chairs, upholstered in a Pedroso & Osorio fabric, and the curtains in my Travelling Light fabric for Christopher Farr Cloth.
