In Room 1402 at The Whitby Hotel, the inspiration for the scheme comes from a striking Grisaille painting on the wall in the drawing room skillfully framed.
The colour palette of the room captures the dramatic swathes of grey in the painting, which creates a harmonious and calming mood. The walls are lined with a smart, textured stripe by Gaston y Daniela called Mont Blanc. The monochrome tones continue on the sofa, which is covered with Holland & Sherry’s Westminster Houndstooth and on the cream and black curtains in a rich and heavy fabric by Lewis & Wood called Stockholm Stitch.
As always, whenever we try to create a monochromatic scheme, a burst of colour always manages to sneak in. In this room, a shock of red is introduced in the wonderful geometric floral fabric by Gaston Y Daniela covering the wing back arm chair and sofa cushions.
The red creates a fabulous contrast against the creams and greys on the walls and upholstery. On the curtains a contrasting panel of red fabric along the leading edge brings the scheme together. These extra details can make all the difference.
So often, when creating a scheme the art fits in once the design of the room has been conceived, but in this room the soft grey tones of the Grisaille painting were the root of our inspiration.
It shows that monochromes needn’t always be a bold statement, but can create a harmonious and relaxing space.
In the bedroom, the calming and monochromatic theme continues. The oversized headboard is covered in a dainty, pale grey fabric called Romo by Xilia Magnesium, which is set against a black fabric wall.
On the curtains we have used my fabric Rick Rack for Christopher Farr. The chunky design with large scale painterly zigzags brings energy to the room. Our signature mannequin and bed cushions are covered in the same fabric, tying the whole room together.
