Kips Bay 2025

Out and About

Step inside the iconic Kips Bay Decorator Show House as it celebrates 50 years of design excellence in New York...

The Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York begins with the generosity of the design community and we loved discovering how designers and craftspeople created some truly standout spaces for this year’s 50th anniversary. This celebrated event not only showcases exceptional design talent but also raises vital funds for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, which supports educational and developmental programmes for more than 10,000 children in need. This year, the show house is set within a beautiful brownstone building in Greenwich Village.

We were immediately drawn to the textured grasscloth walling leading up the staircase at the entrance. James Thomas Interiors elevated the space by commissioning hand-stencilled motifs within the panels, an intricate detail that brought a wonderful sense of artistry and craftsmanship. The motif continued through the stairway, even embellishing the ceiling lights.

Detailed mosaic floor designs added a bold layer of personality and visual rhythm. We loved the textured geometric patterns that brought a playful energy to the rooms they anchored.

Ben Pentreath designed a drawing room lined with flowing trails of leaves and stylised blossoms. The room is filled with heritage antiques, and we particularly admired the hanging tapestry and the striking oriental armoire.

The second-floor living room, designed by Alessandra Branca, offered a sense of calm and comfort. We had to take a second look at the walls, which were adorned with a stunning trompe-l’œil hand-painted wallpaper by Gracie Studio. The wood-panel effect was incredibly realistic, complete with hand-painted artwork that added depth and texture. A Greek-inspired urn decorated with chariot imagery immediately caught our eye upon entering the space.

On the top floor, Huniford Design Studio created a living space drenched in a Phillip Jeffries cork wallcovering. The cork extended across the walls, bookcases, air conditioning units, light switches, and even the ceiling lights. Immersed in amber tones, baby blue accents and earthy neutrals, the room felt like a serene retreat from the bustle of the city.

Another delightful detail throughout the show house was the variation of picture frames in each room. Frames are more than simple borders; they have the power to elevate a sketch into a treasured focal point.

The Kips Bay Decorator Show House never fails to inspire. Each space offers something new, thoughtfully composed with intention and storytelling in every detail. It is a true celebration of craftsmanship, collaboration and creative freedom. Find out more here.
