The Enchanting Mews’ of London

Out and About

Take a look at our favourite London mews to explore...

Tucked away behind the grand Georgian and Victorian facades of London, hidden gems beckon with charm and character. As you step through, you’re greeted by the enchanting mews, with their cobbled streets and distinctive brick fronts. These serene oases offer a peaceful escape amidst the hustle and bustle of the city. The mews have a fascinating history intertwined with the evolution of London, transforming them from humble stables into some of the most desirable homes in the city.

The origins of mews houses date back to the 18th and 19th centuries when they were originally built as stables for horses, grooms and coachmen serving London’s aristocracy. Today, these petite homes, with their signature stable doors, offer a unique blend of historic charm and modern living, making them some of the most sought-after properties in the city.

When staying at one of our hotels, you’re never far from these picturesque streets. Here are a few of our favourite mews to explore next time you are in London:

Warren Mews

Located near Great Portland Street tube station in Fitzrovia, Warren Mews is part of the Bloomsbury Conservation area, close to our Charlotte Street Hotel. This area holds a special place in our hearts, with many nods to the Bloomsbury era.

Stanhope Mews South

Just a stone’s throw away from our Design Studio and Number Sixteen Hotel, Stanhope Mews South is a cobbled cul-de-sac that perfectly captures the essence of South Kensington. We adore the lush greenery and the painted brick facades that give this mews a quintessentially London feel.

Bathurst Mews

One of the largest mews in London, Bathurst Mews houses 65 properties. The most charming feature of this mews is the still-functioning stable, offering a glimpse into its storied past. Just off Hyde Park, you can even venture here for a riding lesson in one of the world’s most famous parks.

St Luke’s Mews

Located in Notting Hill and Holland Park, St Luke’s Mews is one of our favourites due to its vibrant, colourful houses painted in popping pinks and turquoise blues. It’s just a 25-minute journey from our Dorset Square Hotel, and we highly recommend exploring the area for its beauty and charm.
