Nestled along the banks of Leith in Edinburgh, a hidden gem awaits—Bard, a sanctuary dedicated to Scottish craft and design. Founded by Hugo Macdonald and James Stevens, Bard beautifully showcases the richness of Scotland’s creative heritage. As you step inside, you’ll realise it’s not just a shop; it’s a vibrant gallery where every piece tells a story, weaving together the threads of Scotland’s cultural tapestry.
Exploring Bard reveals that it’s about more than just exquisite objects; it’s a space where ideas, people, and history intertwine, celebrating the evolution of Scottish identity through craft. Hugo and James passionately believe in the transformative power of handmade objects, which resonate deeply with us. From intricately designed ceramics to stunning textiles, each item embodies a connection to both tradition and modernity.
We were particularly enchanted by charming woven baskets that reminded us of our own collection suspended above The Whitby Bar. Crafted by Catherine Davies and Pascal Carr, these delightful pieces blend traditional techniques with contemporary flair, utilising organic willow they grow themselves. Each basket tells a unique story, with every twist of willow reflecting their island life.
In a striking interplay of wood and stone, Oliver Spendley’s table left us in awe. Scottish timber rests upon three ancient Lewisian gneiss stones, discovered in his hometown of Sutherland, forged over 3 billion years ago. This table, held by gravity’s embrace, evokes the sacred stone circles of ritual and magic.
Another standout was knitwear designer Jennifer Kent’s ‘Glove Rug’, a stunning homage to the traditional Sanquhar knit patterns from the historic town known for its striking monochromatic designs dating back to the 17th century. As the days grow longer and chillier, this cosy piece made us yearn to layer up!
What truly captivated us was Hugo and James’s mission to share Scotland’s unique craft story with the world from a fresh perspective, daringly pushing boundaries and redefining them. If you ever find yourself wandering through Leith, Bard is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered—a place you never knew you needed.
