Out & About: Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa

The perfect getaway always needs a slice of nature, a spot of culture, a dollop of culinary experiences and a hint of architecture! South Africa, a country of incredible natural beauty was the recent destination of choice for a member of the design team.

Whilst in Cape Town, a jewel of the city and architectural must-see is the newly completed Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa and the Silo Hotel. Both are part of a former 1924 premier grain silo building, re-purposed by British Architect, Thomas Heatherwick.

At nearly 200 feet it was once the tallest building in sub-Saharan Africa. The silos have been precision sliced in to the shape of a grain of corn to create the lobby, or have been skillfully infilled with sculptural glazed lifts and metal staircases. On the roof the silos are topped with glass allowing you to look down into the museum.

There might be 11 official languages in South Africa but there is one thing everyone agrees on – the Zeitz MOCAA is a gem of a building that is definitely worth a visit!
