Out and About: London’s Holiday Season


The holidays are here and unlike the previous two years, we are free of restrictions. If you’re in London or planning to visit this week, we have some suggestions to get you ‘Out and About’. Here is our pick of some exciting events happening across London…

Skating at Somerset House

It’s skating season and nothing is more magical than a winter glide under the stars at Somerset House. The large open air ice rink is situated amongst Somerset House’s neoclassical architecture, so this is guaranteed to create quintessential moments. Open until January 15th with sessions starting from 9am to 10:45pm.

Eltham Palace

The festive season wouldn’t be complete without twinkling lights. Eltham Palace in south east London brings an enchanted trail of lights. Here you can explore the palace and gardens with a spectacular display of illuminations, sound and wonder. Cosy up with some mulled wine and toasted marshmallows as you embark on this evening adventure. Open until December 30th.

Kew Gardens 

We love visiting Kew Gardens and this year the botanics are being illuminated with shimmering delight. A 2km light trail has been created with around 1 million lights. This is a must see attraction if you’re ‘Out and About’ in south west London. You can also enjoy a ride on the carnival carousel! Open until January 8th from 10am- 4pm.

ELMER and Friends: The Colourful World of David McKee

In memory of British children’s author and illustrator David McKee, is a colourful exhibition celebrating his renowned ‘Elmer’ book series. Taking place at Horniman Museum in south London, you can explore the famous patchwork ‘Elmer the Elephant’ and his friends as well as McKee’s other classic characters in this nostalgic ode to all things whimsical and fun. Open until April 16th.

Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol

This is Dickens’ classic ‘A Christmas Carol’, but reimagined by Dolly Parton! Set in the USA’s Deep South, Dolly has infused her western flair and sound into this festive production. It is sure to make our hearts warm with its country charm. On until January 8th at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre. London’s South Bank is also where you can wander through Christmas markets.

Festive Film Club at Covent Garden Hotel

The festive magic gravitates around Covent Garden. Here you can take a stroll down cobbled streets and discover its magnificent Christmas tree, alongside food and festivities. During the holidays Firmdale Film Club at Covent Garden Hotel will be showing some of our favourite film classics. Treat yourself to a three course meal in Brasserie Max before getting cosy with popcorn and a blanket.
