For those who have successfully made it through Dry January, it’s finally over! To celebrate, we thought now would be the perfect moment to share our dos and don’ts for designing a bar with a touch of Kit Kemp inspiration.
DO Embrace Drama
Think big and bold. Oversized artwork, dramatic mirrors and statement chandeliers are essential in our bar designs. These striking elements serve as focal points, adding a theatrical flair and making the space an experience in itself. Take inspiration from the Dive Bar at Ham Yard Hotel, where an extra-large zig-zag mural and a large spiraling sculpture filled with fresh oranges bring energy and excitement to the room.
DO Play with Colour and Pattern
Vibrant colours and eclectic patterns are key to our design ethos. Mixing playful hues and patterns injects life into the space, making it memorable and joyful for guests. However, balance is crucial — pair vibrant tones with neutral accents to maintain harmony.
DO Layer Your Lighting
Lighting is vital in setting the mood and guiding the eye through a space. A mix of chandeliers, table lamps, spotlights and candles creates a layered effect that adds depth and atmosphere. Consider task lighting, too — directing light onto bottle displays or artwork can highlight key features and enhance the experience.
DO Tell a Story
A great design often reflects the history of its surroundings. At the Refuel Bar in The Soho Hotel, we honour the building’s past with vintage oil cans and containers, adding a touch of nostalgia. We also worked with artist Alex Hollweg to create a vibrant mural depicting cars racing through the countryside, further enriching the narrative of the space.
DO Prioritize Comfort
Comfort is a must. A variety of seating options creates a dynamic and inviting atmosphere. Low-level booths encourage intimate conversations, while bar stools offer the perfect perch for guests to watch their cocktails being expertly crafted.
DON’T Be Afraid to Get Creative
Add personal flair with unexpected details, like appliqué on the backs of bar stools or unusual displays. Think outside the box—such as the collection of antique British baskets hanging in The Whitby Bar and Restaurant. These elements spark curiosity and conversation, giving your bar its own unique character.
DO Incorporate Different Seating Levels
Creating a dynamic and engaging space means varying the height and arrangement of your seating. A mix of lounge chairs bar stools and elevated seating areas adds depth and encourages different experiences. Raised seating can offer a sense of intimacy and exclusivity, while lower seating creates a more relaxed, social atmosphere. This diversity in seating helps make the space feel more inviting and offers guests options depending on their mood or the occasion.
We hope this inspires you to design a bar that’s not only unforgettable but also a true reflection of your creativity and personality. Cheers to making your space as exciting as the cocktails you serve!
