As the seasons change, we often find ourselves digging through closets for those long-forgotten scarves and hats. Similarly, in our homes, we’ll soon be reaching for cosy throw blankets, lighting candles, and considering new art or décor pieces to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for the cooler days ahead. Today, we’re exploring six creative ways to bring sustainable design into your home this autumn.
Source Sturdy Antiques
When designing our interiors, we love heading to our favorite antique stores. There, we find high-quality, timeless pieces that have already stood the test of time. Instead of purchasing something new, why not give these treasures a second life? Antiques not only add unique character and charm but are also a sustainable choice that helps reduce waste.
Opt for Wood Flooring
Though wood flooring may seem like a big investment upfront, it’s one that truly pays off over time. In our designs, wood flooring serves as the foundation for creating warm and welcoming spaces. Wood is incredibly durable and can last for decades. Look for reclaimed wood or products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) to ensure you’re making an eco-friendly choice.
Upcycle with Paint
Get creative by upcycling old furniture or décor. With a little paint and imagination, you can transform existing pieces into statement art that becomes the focal point of your room. In the Library at The Soho Hotel, we breathed new life into an old chest with decorative painting. Upcycling not only gives items a fresh look but also helps reduce waste, keeping them out of landfills.
Repurpose with Framing
Turn everyday objects or collections into striking décor by repurposing them through framing. In our hotels, we’ve framed everything from theatre ticket stubs to old mobile phones, turning discarded items into intriguing curiosities. At Dorset Square Hotel, we’ve even framed old cricket bats, adding quirky flair and sparking the imagination.
Grow Your Green Spaces
With mild winters, our garden remains lush and productive throughout much of the year. What could be more sustainable than growing your own artichokes and rhubarb?
At Ham Yard Hotel, our rooftop kitchen garden provides us with honey from our own beehives and juicy pears from our fruit trees.
Recycle Your Scraps
At our design studio, we love creating Patchwork Animals and Loop Hole Bags using fabric offcuts and recycled materials. From the whimsical Kit Cat to the friendly Willow Bear, these playful creatures are not only fun but a clever way to make something special from leftover materials.
We hope these ideas inspire you to bring sustainable design into your home this autumn!
