How to Use Patchwork

How To

Discover how we have used the delightful art of patchwork in our designs...

The craft of patchwork has been cherished for centuries, holding cultural, social, and artistic significance. Originally, it was a practical method to reuse fabric scraps for creating quilts and garments. Over time, it has evolved into a creative art form, showcasing storytelling and designs through intricate patterns and vibrant colours. Today, we want to share how we’ve incorporated patchwork into our designs.

Patchwork Headboards

Patchwork headboards make a bold statement by introducing various colours and textures into the design. As you examine the fabrics closely, you uncover detailed stories within the patterns. At The Whitby Hotel, we’ve used one of our favourite Raoul Textiles fabrics to create a striking headboard, featuring organic shapes and bold colours that bring the patchwork scenes to life.

Patchwork Sofas

A patchwork sofa offers a playful approach to upholstery. In the Richmond Buildings, we’ve upholstered grand sofas using Pierre Frey’s ‘Charlotte’ fabric. The graphic patchwork effect honors the design itself, while the large-scale pattern brightens the room and adds dimension.

Patchwork Quilts

Patchwork quilts and blankets often carry sentimental value, perhaps inherited or collected from travels. These pieces make perfect end-of-bed accessories, adding meaning and personal touch. Below, a playful headboard design and a special mirror-embellished Kantha quilt harmoniously bring the scheme together. Quilts are not only objects of beauty but also of purpose. We collaborated with Fine Cell Work to create the ‘Tapestry of Redemption’, with each stitch carrying a unique story and creativity.

Patchwork Rugs

Our ‘Patchwork’ rug for Annie Selke brings the pattern to the floor, with its scale and colour enlivening any room.

Patchwork in Upholstery

Our fabric for Christopher Farr, ‘Folk Art’, embodies patchwork design and embroidery craftsmanship. Customising the threads to match each scheme ensures a cohesive flow. We’ve used this fabric to upholster an end-of-bed stool in the suite below.

We hope we’ve inspired you to incorporate the craft of patchwork into your designs.
