Summer is a cheerful time and brings happy memories for many, so why not bring some joy to your interiors? We often say the smallest details can create the biggest impact. We’ve put together some ‘Dos and Don’ts’ which prove that transforming your home for the summer doesn’t have to be costly.
DO: Decorate with colour…
We believe people gravitate towards colour as it makes them happy. This repainted kitchen is the perfect example. A simple splash of colour has completely changed the mood of the room. Here we have colour blocked using three different paints: an earthy red, a sunny yellow and a duck egg blue. Isn’t it cheery?
Yellow in particular is guaranteed to bring summer magic into your home. An instant mood enhancer, it will put a spring in your step whatever the weather. We’ve expanded the colour palette in this scheme by including a ‘Patchwork’ tufted wool rug from our collection with Annie Selke. Find our ‘How to Style’ tips for the collection here.
DO: Change your cushions…
Never underestimate the power of the cushion. They are key for adding extra contrast, pattern, texture and colour to a space, as well as a tool for tying a scheme together. We are often swapping our cushions around as it can change the entire atmosphere of a room without having to break the bank.
At The Soho Hotel’s ‘Soho Residence’, you’ll find colours that bring warmth and sunshine. Explore this space further here.
DON’T: Use heavy bed linen…
During these summer days our bedrooms are warmer and this can make it hard to sleep at night. At our hotels, sheets are made with premium cotton for silk-like smoothness and make you feel like you’re sinking into a cloud. For many years our hotel guests have asked where they can find Firmdale bedding, so now we have Firmdale Sleep available from Shop Kit Kemp. Remove that winter duvet and invest in some lighter sheets for your bed. You won’t regret it!
DO: Accessorise with fresh flowers…
One of our greatest loves at the Design Studio is florals. We bring them into our designs through fabrics, wallpapers, motifs and accessories. But honestly, nothing beats the real thing. Accessorising with flowers and styling a space is an important component. For a powerful and impactful arrangement, we love to play with numbers and scale. Placing three vases of varying heights will create drama and it’s a format we turn to, time and time again. Here is an example of this simple but effective arrangement in The Whitby Suite at The Whitby Hotel. You can also explore Flowers: Our Styling Handbook.
DON’T: Forget to be resourceful…Â
We never shy away from being resourceful with art, textiles and accessories. Last year we celebrated the launch of our collection with Annie Selke at Ham Yard Hotel’s Roof Terrace and here, we dressed our tables with bedspreads from the collection. Using this Happy Go Lucky Bedspread for a table dressing shows how anything can be repurposed to create a transformation. An elegantly dressed garden table is a great way to make a summer’s outdoor meal feel special.
We hope these ‘Dos and Don’ts’ help you make exciting changes to your home this summer. Remember to tag us on Instagram @KitKempDesignThread so that we can see your summertime schemes.
