Stories Told in Stitches

Day to Day

Discover how the art of stitching shapes our interiors, from embroidered upholstery to intricate appliqué and decorative fabrics...

A single stitch can bring a design to life. From delicate embroidered flowers to contrasting threads and intricate appliqué, these details introduce texture, colour and craftsmanship to upholstery and textiles. At our Design Studio, we have a longstanding appreciation for the handmade. Stitching offers endless possibilities to explore pattern, introduce unexpected details and create distinctive designs that bring an added dimension to an interior.

The art of stitching dates back thousands of years, beginning as a practical necessity before evolving into a decorative craft. Across the world, different cultures developed their own needlework traditions, from elaborate embroideries and tapestries to patchwork and quilting. For centuries, these techniques have been used to tell stories, preserve cultural traditions and express creativity. Today, they continue to inform contemporary interiors, bringing centuries of craftsmanship into modern design.

Upholstery offers endless possibilities for decorative stitching. An armchair can be transformed by a carefully placed embroidered motif, a contrasting thread or a distinctive finish along the edges. Appliqué is a particular favourite, allowing shapes cut from fabric to be layered and stitched onto a base cloth. Flowers, animals and abstract motifs can all be introduced through this technique, creating designs that feel individual and full of detail.

The smallest touches can be just as effective. A blanket stitch around the edge of a chair or an embroidered motif across its back can introduce a subtle contrast or become a defining feature of the piece.

At Warren Street Hotel, the beautifully stitched sofa and headboard in our Songbird Suite demonstrate how embroidery can take centre stage, bringing colour, pattern and intricate detail to upholstered furniture.

Stitching can blur the boundaries between textiles and fine art, with thread becoming a medium for creating intricate compositions through colour, texture and form. Textile artists Pippa Caley and Basak Ağaoğlu explore the possibilities of embroidery and appliqué, bringing flowers, flowing forms and intricate details to upholstered furniture and headboards. Their work demonstrates how traditional techniques can be used to create distinctive pieces that sit somewhere between art and design.

Another artist whose work celebrates the handmade is Sanaa Gateja. Using beads made from rolled post-consumer paper, which are then stitched onto bark cloth, he creates intricate compositions that bring together traditional craftsmanship and the inventive use of materials. His work offers a fresh perspective on textile art, giving discarded materials a new purpose through an intricate, labour-intensive process.

Embroidery brings a different quality to fabric. Unlike a printed design, stitched motifs create a raised surface that catches the light, adding depth and texture to a pattern.  We also love pairing embroidered fabrics with stripes, checks and printed linens. Combining different scales and textures creates depth within a scheme, allowing each fabric to contribute something different to the overall design.

What makes stitching so enduring is the skill and attention behind every detail. Each technique offers a different way to introduce craftsmanship into an interior, whether through an embroidered headboard, an appliqué cushion or decorative stitching on an armchair.

These details may be small, but their effect can be far-reaching. They bring texture to a surface, draw the eye to a particular feature and reveal the hand of the maker, reminding us that sometimes the most compelling stories are told through the finest details.
