Finding Design Inspiration Closer to Home

Day to Day

Discover how to find design inspiration in the everyday...

Inspiration does not always have to come from a faraway trip, an exhibition or the pages of a magazine. Sometimes, the most interesting ideas are waiting just outside your front door.

We are surrounded by colour, texture, shape and character every day, yet it is easy to stop noticing what is familiar. Taking a different route to work, walking through a local park or simply slowing down to look more closely at the buildings and shopfronts around us can reveal an entirely new source of design inspiration.

Look to the Seasons

Autumn is a wonderful time to look to nature for inspiration. As the leaves change, the streets fill with russet reds, burnt oranges, deep greens and golden yellows. A single fallen leaf can inspire an entire colour palette, from its shape and delicate veins to the subtle variations in tone. These details can become the starting point for artwork, embroidery or an appliqué cushion, reinterpreting the natural world through textiles and craft.

Take Notice of Colour

Colour inspiration can be found on every street. A bottle-green door against warm brick, a chalky blue framed by pale stone or a bold red can transform the feel of a building. These combinations can inspire an interior, from a headboard in a striking shade to rugs, curtains and upholstery that echo the tones of the surrounding architecture.

Look at the Lettering

Inspiration is not limited to interiors. Look at the hand-painted lettering on a bakery window, the sign above a café or the typography on an old restaurant menu. Old street signs are particularly full of character. Their borders, proportions, colours and imperfect lettering can all offer inspiration.

Read the Buildings Around You

Buildings offer endless material inspiration, from weathered brick and natural stone to polished brass and decorative ironwork. These contrasts can translate beautifully into interiors, where mixing worn and polished finishes, intricate details and simpler forms creates depth and a sense of history.

Find Inspiration in Your Local Park

Parks offer a chance to slow down and observe the world around you. Sketch the landscape, photograph the changing trees or notice the shapes of winding paths and flower beds. Even everyday activities, from a game of tennis to a brightly coloured picnic, can inspire unexpected patterns, shapes and colour combinations.

Explore What Is Local to You

Markets, independent shops, small galleries and neighbourhood cafés offer a wealth of inspiration, each reflecting the character of their surroundings through colour, craftsmanship and carefully chosen details.

Notice the colours of a market stall, the ceramics in a café, the artwork in a small gallery or the handmade details you might otherwise walk past. These small observations can become unexpected starting points for a room, a pattern or a piece of furniture.

You do not need to wait for the perfect trip or exhibition to feel inspired. Take photographs on your morning walk, pick up a fallen leaf, keep an interesting menu or note down an unexpected colour combination. Sometimes, all you need to do is step outside your front door and look at the familiar with fresh eyes.
