Following last night’s eclipse, our eyes are still turned skywards, reminded of the enduring fascination of the Sun and Moon. One radiant and energising, the other mysterious and calm, these heavenly opposites have long inspired artists and makers.
This week, we explore some of our favourite rooms where sun, moon and star motifs bring storytelling, imagination and a touch of magic to the design.
In the recently refurbished Room 1402 at The Whitby Hotel, we created a bespoke appliqué headboard, beautifully hand-stitched by our in-house artist. Its enchanting night sky of crescent moons, golden stars and billowing clouds was inspired by our Rain or Shine fabric for Chelsea Textiles, used for the curtains. Together, they create a joyful story that flows throughout the room, bringing a wonderful sense of imagination and craftsmanship to the scheme.
In Room 403 at Charlotte Street Hotel, our Starry Night wallpaper sweeps across the walls and into the eaves, enveloping the room in a rich blue. Scattered with delicate golden stars, it embraces the sloping architecture and transforms the space into a romantic, cocooning haven. Warm yellow accents and the richly patterned headboard, upholstered in our Front Row fabric with GP &Â J Baker, glow against the blue, creating the magical feeling of sleeping beneath a starlit sky.
In Residence 14 at Ham Yard Hotel, the sitting room walls are wrapped in our Harlequin fabric, designed for Rosebank. Its rich blue tones evoke the cool glow of moonlight before leading into the adjoining bedroom, where the sun appears to rise above rolling hills on a bespoke appliqué headboard. Bold sweeps of ochre, pink and blue create a joyful focal point against the richly striped walls, while hand-appliquéd star cushions continue the story across the bed. The result is playful and uplifting, taking us from moonlight into the warmth of a new day.
Our fascination with the night sky also inspired Over the Moon, our fabric design for Andrew Martin. Playful moon faces drift amongst tiny stars, bringing character and a touch of humour to the pattern. Used here in the Denim colourway, it envelops the dressing room in the Suffolk Suite at Haymarket Hotel, creating the feeling of being wrapped in a clear night sky.
The Sun and Moon offer an endless source of inspiration, whether appearing boldly across a headboard or quietly woven into the details of a room. Their celestial dance reminds us that the most memorable interiors are often those that encourage us to pause, look a little closer and allow our imaginations to wander.
