Finding Home Design Inspiration in Your Summer Travels

Day to Day

Discover how bringing inspiration from your travels into the home can create spaces filled with warmth, character and individuality...

Summer travel has a wonderful way of opening our eyes. A weekend by the sea, a long lunch in the countryside, or a morning spent wandering through a market or museum, these moments often stay with us long after the suitcase has been unpacked. They can also become some of the richest sources of inspiration for the home.

At our Design Studio, travel has always been an important source of ideas. A room should tell a story and often the most personal stories begin with the places we have loved. It might be the colour of a painted doorway in the Mediterranean, mosaics in Rome, a handwoven bamboo basket in Japan, or an antique textile discovered in India. These details can all become starting points for a room that feels layered with memories and entirely your own.

One of the simplest ways to bring travel inspiration into the home is through colour. Summer destinations are often filled with unexpected palettes: sun-faded terracotta, deep sea blues, olive greens and vibrant floral tones. Rather than recreating a place too literally, select a few colours that capture your attention and introduce them as accents throughout a space.

Patterns can also become a lasting reminder of a place. Look for motifs in architecture, textiles, ceramics and nature. A decorative cornice, embroidered tablecloth, tiled floor or botanical print can all inspire a scheme. Consider the scale of the pattern too, whether it feels bold or delicate, structured or organic. Layering large-scale patterns with smaller ones, or balancing geometrics with florals, helps create a space that feels collected rather than overly coordinated.

Travel also reminds us of the importance of craftsmanship. The most memorable interiors often include pieces made by hand: ceramics, woven rugs, carved wooden furniture, painted trays, embroidered linens or artworks by local makers. These objects bring individuality to a home. They do not need to be grand or expensive; often the most meaningful pieces are those with a story behind them. A small bowl found on holiday can be just as significant as a larger statement piece if it carries a memory.

When returning from a summer trip, think about the atmosphere as much as objects. What made the place feel special? Was it the relaxed breakfast table, wildflowers in the landscape, soft lighting in the evening, or the way indoor and outdoor spaces flowed together? These are ideas that can be translated beautifully into the home, helping to recreate that sense of ease and escape.

Above all, allow your home to become a collection of experiences. The best rooms are not designed in a day; they evolve through curiosity, memories and discovery. On your next journey, become an observer.

Take photographs of details and surroundings, learn about the history of a place and immerse yourself in its art and architecture. While discovering somewhere new, you are often uncovering your own interests too. By bringing home the colours, textures, patterns and stories from your travels, you create interiors that feel deeply personal and reflective of where you have been and what has inspired you along the way.
