A Softer Approach to Kitchen Design

Day to Day

Discover how introducing softer design elements can transform the kitchen from a functional space into the heart of the home...

There is something quietly reassuring about a kitchen that feels as welcoming as the sitting room next door. Once viewed simply as a place for preparation, today’s kitchen has become the backdrop for family conversations, celebrations and everyday moments. Rather than standing apart as a purely functional workspace, softer kitchens embrace the idea that beauty and comfort belong in daily life.

Open-plan living has brought the kitchen firmly into the heart of the home, where so much of everyday life now unfolds. A softer approach to kitchen design does not reject functionality; instead, it introduces warmth and character into it. In this space, we dressed the kitchen as we would any other room, with an upholstered banquette, symmetrical bookshelves and artwork that creates a striking focal point.

No matter the size of your kitchen, there is always a way to make it feel lived-in and as important as the other rooms in your home.

In this space, we transformed what could have been a forgotten area into something full of personality. A rich blue within the joinery carries the scheme through the room, while upholstered stools add a bold accent. Alongside it, a dedicated corner with two armchairs creates an inviting place to gather, pause and slow the pace of the day.

Introducing elements that would traditionally belong to other rooms can make a kitchen feel more considered and personal. An antique console with table lamps above it, alongside a large painting as we have used below, helps the kitchen feel less like a functional workspace and more reflective of the way we actually live.

Just as you would in any other room, think about layering. A rug, an antique chair or a display of personal objects can ensure the kitchen reflects the people who live there, rather than feeling purely decorative.

Lighting deserves just as much attention as any other feature within the room. A beautifully crafted pendant above the kitchen can transform the atmosphere, creating a calmer and more welcoming space. As daylight fades, softer lighting encourages people to gather and stay a little longer, enjoying the slower pace of the evening.

Ultimately, softening a kitchen through thoughtful design choices celebrates the idea that comfort belongs in everyday life. Kitchens are no longer simply places to prepare meals; they have become spaces where everyday life unfolds, growing and evolving as the true heart of the home.
