We are delighted to share that the rehabilitation charity and social enterprise, Fine Cell Work, has been granted a Royal Warrant by Her Majesty The Queen for providing needlework products stitched in prison. As one of the very few charities to receive this honour, Fine Cell Work is the only British organisation offering purposeful, paid activity to people in prison that can be undertaken within their cells. Kit is a proud Trustee of Fine Cell Work and has worked with the charity in many ways over the years.
With nearly thirty years’ experience working in prisons across the UK, Fine Cell Work teaches individuals with no prior stitching experience to create intricate, hand-stitched products. These are either commissioned by heritage organisations, renowned designers and contemporary artists, or sold directly to the public.
Fine Cell Work is an exceptional charity that supports people in prison on their journey towards rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society, helping to break the cycle of reoffending. Through meaningful, professional needlework, prisoners and former prisoners are able to develop valuable skills, earn an income and gain a renewed sense of purpose.
The recent award of a Royal Warrant is a testament to the outstanding craftsmanship, dedication and skill at the heart of Fine Cell Work. This prestigious recognition highlights the value of their work beyond prison walls, empowering participants to build confidence, develop a sense of achievement and envisage positive futures beyond crime.
Fine Cell Work employs a wide range of decorative techniques, including appliqué and embroidery, to create beautifully handcrafted pieces. From intricate stem stitches to delicate French knots, their stitchers bring exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship to every project. Below are some of our favourite pieces created with them:
Our Dapper Dogs Cushions and Pouches
Our Beagle Hand-stitched Dog Cushion is available to buy here.
Tasha’s Trip Cushion
Rain Shadow Cushion
Other products created exclusively for the Kit Kemp Design Studio include handmade headboards and bed cushions. We find that appliqué and embroidery are particularly effective in creating statement headboards, adding craftsmanship, character and a sense of drama and detail to any space.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration and creating beautiful pieces together, while supporting Fine Cell Work’s vital mission to help people build brighter futures beyond prison.
