Our Case for the Bookcase

Day to Day

Discover how a beautifully curated bookcase can transform a room and bring your interiors to life...

Here at our Design Studio, we simply adore books. With the upcoming release of our new book:Design Stories, it feels like the perfect moment to celebrate them and, of course, the bookcases that hold them. Books are not only for reading. They are an essential part of our interiors, bringing warmth, colour and character to every corner. In an increasingly digital age, they encourage us to slow down, linger and lose ourselves in a story. Their spines invite curiosity, their titles spark conversation, and their presence makes a room feel truly lived in. We hope the examples below inspire you to reawaken an existing bookcase, curate one that reflects your style, or finally pick up the book you have been meaning to read for months.

In the suite below, a custom-built bookcase frames the television. Its mirrored backing reflects light and visually expands the space, while the playful arrangement of books leaning, stacking and layering brings energy and movement to the room.

In this colourful drawing room, a medley of book spines draws the scheme together. This modern, spirited approach infuses the room with vibrancy. Bookcases can also become a home for art. Here, a joyful cocker spaniel painting sits cleverly atop the shelves, adding an extra layer of creativity and charm.

At Charlotte Street Hotel, the library takes on a more traditional character, with antique books that transport you into another time. The bookcase blends seamlessly into the wall and cradles the fireplace, inviting guests to choose a classic title and settle by the fire.

Like Charlotte Street Hotel, The Soho Hotel library features rows of antique books, though here a playful illuminated ladder brings a contemporary twist.

A freestanding bookshelf painted by Tess Newall in vibrant greens, reds and yellows draws inspiration from European folk art. Its intricate hand-painted panels transform the books into part of an art installation, creating a focal point that sets the tone for colour, texture and personality.

In the drawing room at Warren Street Hotel, backlit bookcases gently illuminate the space, highlighting both books and carefully chosen objects. Here, books and collectables live side by side, a reminder that your favourite pieces can also explore the shelves.

At Knightsbridge Hotel, the colours of the book spines complement the room’s palette, echoing the tones of our Bunty fabric that covers the sofas.

Look closely and you may spot a tiny world tucked between the shelves: a miniature grand piano complete with a sparkling little chandelier. It feels almost as if one of the books has sprung to life overnight.

In the Marylebone Room at Dorset Square Hotel, books are arranged by colour, mirroring the palette of the space and pairing beautifully with the armchairs upholstered in Pierre Frey’s playful Cartoon fabric.

Limited wall space need not be a barrier. Clever shelving, such as the bookshelf-lined walls at Number Sixteen, can open up an interior and turn even the smallest corner into an intriguing focal point.

From playful and contemporary to classic and traditional, our bookcases do more than store books. They shape the atmosphere, tell a story and bring each space to life. A bookcase is never just furniture. It is an essential ingredient in creating a warm, personal and welcoming interior.
