How To Get Your Home Ready For The Winter Months

Day to Day

Discover how to create a home that feels irresistibly cosy and inviting, with simple seasonal touches that elevate every room...

As the golden leaves fall and the nights draw in, there is a certain magic in the air, the promise of roaring fires, red wine and cosy evenings wrapped in blankets. Winter is not a season to endure but one to embrace, and your home should reflect that. With just a few thoughtful touches, you can transform your space into a haven that warms the soul and invites lingering conversations. Here are our top five tips to get your home ready for the winter months, with colour, craft and comfort leading the way.

1. Layer Up

Winter calls for layers. Think of your home as a well-dressed traveller, swathed in textures and stories. Now is the moment to pile on the throws and cushions. Mix embroidery with wool with linen. The more unexpected the combination, the better. One of our favourites is a Knight Wood Cutwork Olive Bedspread from our collection with Annie Selke draped over a bed, or a woolly throw in a beautiful check that sings against deep blues and forest greens. There is no such thing as too many cushions in winter. If in doubt, add another.

2. Let There Be Light, and Plenty of It

As daylight becomes a rare and precious thing, good lighting is essential. Overhead lights can feel harsh and flat, so avoid them as much as possible. Instead, think in pools of light created by table lamps, sconces and candlelight. We always choose warm toned bulbs to soften a room, and we adore using crafted lampshades to bring character into forgotten corners.

3. Bring in the Wool Rugs

There is a certain charm in things that feel handmade and lived in. Winter is not about polished surfaces or perfect corners. It is about warmth, texture and tactility. Now is the time to embrace the soft and the snug. Bring out the wool rugs and let them set the tone.

4. Dress Your Windows and Your Walls

Heavy curtains in rich fabrics are not only beautiful, they are practical. They keep out the draughts and make a room feel instantly cosier. We love using fabrics that tell a story, whether through a folklore inspired print or a vivid stripe that recalls a faraway market. If you cannot update your curtains, consider creating a feature wall with a large tapestry or textile artwork. We recently framed an antique textile and it transformed the room entirely. It feels like a warm embrace for the walls.

5. Scent the Season

Scent is the quiet storyteller of a room. You may not see it, but its presence is unmistakable. As the temperature drops, fill your home with fragrances that feel like a warm embrace. Think of spiced orange, woody cedar and a gentle whisper of smoke from the fire.

In the end, winter is all about atmosphere. It is about creating spaces that welcome you home, wrap you in warmth and encourage you to stay a little longer. Do not be afraid of colour or of mixing things that do not match. Trust your instincts, embrace texture and celebrate the season.
