In design, it is often the smallest gestures that leave the most lasting impressions. A clever piping, a hand-painted edge, or a thoughtfully framed piece can transform a space from ordinary to unforgettable. At our Design Studio, we see detailing as a language of its own, one that speaks of craftsmanship, creativity, and care. Here are our top tips for designing details that feel intentional, bespoke, and full of character.
Colour Blocking
In schemes rich with pattern and texture, bold plain fabrics can help bring balance and harmony. Colour blocking is a wonderful way to do this while still adding interest. Consider how the shape of your furniture can work with contrasting colours to create rhythm and proportion. Playing with these elements can turn a simple piece into a striking focal point.
Piping and Trims
Piping and trims are often the finishing touches that bring a piece to life. They can add subtle contrast, a pop of colour, or a sense of rhythm that makes furniture feel truly bespoke. But do not stop at the expected. Try a braided cord tracing the arm of a chair, a multicoloured piping that layers tone upon tone, or a modern interpretation of a tassel to transform a familiar silhouette into something unique.
Detailing does not need to end with furniture. In our WOW! House project, we introduced a trim around the cornice, creating an unexpected feature that elegantly links the ceiling to the walls.
Painting Architectural Elements
Sometimes we are faced with architectural features that simply have to stay, such as a structural pillar or an awkward beam. Instead of disguising them, celebrate them. By drawing the eye, these elements can become part of the story of the space. In one of our projects, we highlighted the pillars with colour, turning them from obstacles into anchors. The result felt intentional and playful, proof that good design often comes from working with what is there, not against it.
In other rooms, we carried this approach through to the balustrades and cornices, using colour to tie architectural details back into the overall scheme.
Framing
From artwork to mirrors, framing is one of our favourite ways to make the simple feel special. A vintage print, a forgotten photograph, or even a beautiful fabric offcut can be elevated with the right frame.
Think beyond traditional wood or metal. A painted frame can add depth, contrast, and freshness, the perfect finishing touch that turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.
Designing details is an act of care. It is about slowing down, paying attention, and creating moments that reveal themselves over time. We hope you have enjoyed discovering how the smallest details can make the biggest impact in design.
