Perfect Piping: Small Details with Big Impact

Day to Day

Discover how we’ve used piping to make a small detail have a big impact...

In the world of interiors, it is often the smallest details that bring a scheme to life. Piping is one of those understated finishing touches that can add polish, structure and even a touch of mischief. Whether used on upholstery, cushions or curtains, piping is a brilliant way to define shape and introduce either contrast or cohesion within a room.

The braided trim in The Soho Suite is a wonderful example of how much fun can be had when you play with scale. Read more about this in our Unexpected Upholstery blog here.

At our Design Studio, piping is never an afterthought; it is woven into every scheme to add a tailored edge that says, “this has been considered”. Much like the perfect hem on a dress, it gives furniture and textiles a sense of formality while allowing for joyful injections of colour and personality.

We often use it to create dialogue between pieces: a sofa in a vibrant weave with a punchy leather pipe, or a headboard outlined in a bright contrasting colour to draw attention to its shape. In Room 404 at Dorset Square Hotel, piping brings harmony between the bed valance, cushions and chair upholstery. You can read more about this beautiful room in our blog, linked here.

Do not be afraid to play with scale or pattern. A wide piping in a small motif can give a classic shape a contemporary twist, while contrast piping in leather can introduce the unexpected, particularly on a more relaxed silhouette. Even the simplest change of colour can give an upholstered piece an entirely new attitude.

One of our favourite tricks is to let piping act as a thread that runs quietly through a room: perhaps picking up on a tone from a decorative fabric, or echoing the lining of a curtain. It creates a secret rhythm that only reveals itself the longer you spend in the space.

Above all, piping is a reminder that interiors should be as delightful up close as they are from a distance. It is an artisan flourish that shows care has been taken, not simply to impress, but to uplift. In a world of mass production, hand-finished details like these speak volumes.

So, next time you are designing a room, consider piping your pieces. It is a trim with timeless charm.
