A beautifully dressed table has the power to transform an everyday meal into a special occasion and a casual gathering into something truly memorable. Laying a table is like painting on a blank canvas. It is a chance to tell a story, play with layers and most importantly, create a welcoming atmosphere. In today’s blog, we’re sharing our top tips for setting the perfect table and making every meal feel like a celebration.
Colour
Like in a painting, start with a base: the table is your canvas and colour is key. Whether it is a crisp white linen tablecloth or a wooden surface, think about contrast and building up with layers. Mix patterns and textures confidently. Begin with a bold floral tablecloth like the ones shown below to bring a sense of joy to the table. Then add plates in a variety of designs, combining vintage treasures with modern classics.
Our PIT-A-PAT tables are pieces of artwork in their own right. Their intricate wooden elements in varying colours act as a tablecloth and effortlessly uplift the space. Below, our New York design is paired with the Tall Trees china collection.
Glassware
Glassware is the jewellery of the table. It catches the light, adding sparkle and a sense of occasion. Instead of uniform sets, mix and match different styles and heights. A cut-crystal wine glass alongside a delicate water goblet creates an interesting set. If you are serving cocktails, perhaps a quirky vintage coupe makes for a delightful conversation starter.
Napkins
Napkins are an opportunity to introduce texture. Through linen or cotton, your table setting will immediately feel more luxurious. Create thoughtful compositions by coordinating colours and adding a simple ribbon with flowers, as we have done with our Calypso dinnerware collection below.
If you want to go a step further, embroidered napkins will elevate your table setting. Matching our dinnerware, our mythical creatures for Drury Lane add to the storytelling, emphasising the theme and concept. Alternatively, an embroidered napkin with initials will make guests feel truly special.
The CentrepieceÂ
Flowers are the natural showstoppers, but why stop there? A scattering of candles in different heights adds drama and delight.
For larger tables, keep arrangements low so guests can see each other.
Make it Seasonal
Add an extra layer of interest and storytelling by letting your centrepiece reflect the season. For autumn, we introduced a tablecloth adorned with leaves and added warm orange accents using pumpkins and seasonal flowers.
For summer, take advantage of the outdoors and use seasonal colours. For this alfresco lunch, we used our new Potato Print fabric designed for GP & J Baker, styled with grape hyacinths and seasonal flowers.
Our last tip: once you have set the table, step back and take it in. Does it feel inviting? Does it make you want to sit down with a glass of something delicious and stay a while? If the answer is yes, then you have done it just right. Happy hosting!
