The Orangery at The Whitby Hotel

Day to Day

Step inside The Orangery and discover a space that is elegant, timeless and thoughtfully designed...

Step inside The Orangery at The Whitby Hotel, nestled in the heart of Midtown Manhattan and discover a beautifully refreshed space. Originally inspired by the charm of a Parisian brasserie, the design captures an atmosphere that is elegant, timeless and welcoming.

We have reimagined the upholstery to introduce a more contemporary atmosphere while preserving the refined character that makes this room so special. With warmer weather arriving and summer just around the corner, this light-filled space beneath the skylight is the perfect setting to enjoy a delicious meal and a glass of something sparkling.

Lining the back wall are comfortable banquettes. On one side, they are upholstered in a sophisticated Pierre Frey weave; on the other, we have used our fabric Runaway, designed for GP & J Baker. This durable textile adds a playful pop of colour and the striped pattern brings a sense of movement, naturally drawing the eye through the space. We have layered the banquettes with cushions covered in our Potato Print fabric for added texture and charm.

Opposite the banquettes sit our signature Susan chairs, upholstered in a mix of fabrics. The front features a timeless stripe, while the back displays our whimsical Knight’s Tale design. Paired with the more structured Bunty fabric, the combination strikes a perfect balance between fantasy and sophistication. Each chair is finished with smart leather piping and a practical handle, adding a tactile detail that is both stylish and functional.

Look upwards and you will discover a striking, hand-crafted collection of ceramic pots by artist Martha Freud. Her work features iconic New York City landmarks — a subtle tribute to the vibrant, historic city in which you are dining. These sculptural pieces cast a soft, ambient glow, bringing warmth and character to the room.

Our green Knight’s Tale design also appears on the curtains that connect the Orangery to the main restaurant, creating a charming and cohesive visual link.

If you glance up once more, you will see two grand chandeliers, playfully adorned with metal parrots and toucans nestled within glass votives. This unexpected detail adds a touch of whimsy and personality to the space.

Among the many layered textures and patterns, a standout feature is the Italian-style marble fireplace. Flanked by antique serving platters encased in acrylic frames, this curated display provides a gallery-like moment. The vivid colours of the platters sing against the warm terracotta walls, adding another dimension to the room’s character. Just beyond the Orangery is a tranquil escape from the energy of New York City. On sunny days, guests can dine al fresco on our peaceful outdoor patio.

This versatile space is ideal for everything from large celebrations and family lunches to quiet, intimate meals for two. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
