Paper in Design

Day to Day

Discover some of the ways we have thoughtfully incorporated paper into our designs...

Paper is a material that is often overlooked, yet it features in our designs more frequently than one might expect. Its weight, texture, colour and durability all contribute to its versatility and charm. Today on the blog, we are delighted to share some of the ways we have thoughtfully incorporated paper into our work.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper offers a wonderful opportunity to tell a fresh and engaging story across your walls. More than just a decorative layer, it sets the tone for the entire space, creating atmosphere, character and depth. With an endless array of patterns and a wide spectrum of colours, wallpaper allows you to express a unique design narrative. Whether soft and subtle or bold and playful, the right wallpaper can evoke mood, reflect personality and bring a room beautifully to life.

Artwork

Paper takes on a new life in the hands of artists. We are especially drawn to the craft of papier mâché, with its rich texture and layered depth. Every handmade detail is something to be admired. We treasure our collection of encased papier mâché works by Mimi de Biarritz, each piece full of character.

Another favourite artist of ours, Sanaa Gateja, creates striking tapestries from recycled paper beads. Each work is backed with a strong sheet of paper, giving the piece both structure and presence, while celebrating the beauty of reused materials.

Lighting

Lampshades offer a chance to add personality and texture to lighting. Some shades are made entirely of paper, allowing the light to filter through softly. In other cases, fabric is paperbacked to increase strength and durability.

In The Orangery at Crosby Street Hotel, we have embraced lighting as both a functional and decorative element. The chandeliers and sconces may appear weighty, but they are actually crafted from a material similar to papier mâché which is light and airy, creating the perfect ambience for dining.

We hope you have enjoyed discovering how we incorporate the medium of paper into our designs.
