At our Design Studio, we are passionate about texture, so it feels only natural to introduce a sense of tactility wherever possible. One area that is often overlooked is the ceiling, a surface full of untapped potential. Join us on the blog as we share some of our favourite ways to enhance a room’s features and show how we view the fifth wall as an opportunity to add unexpected detail.
Moulding
Moulding is a thoughtful way to elevate a space. It brings a sense of romanticism and grandeur while naturally drawing the eye upwards. This added layer of detail can be subtle and elegant, offering visual interest without overwhelming the room.
Sloped Ceilings
Sloped ceilings can sometimes create a visual divide within a space. By continuing wallpaper across the slope, you achieve a seamless transition from the walls to the ceiling. This technique helps unify the space and makes the room feel more expansive and considered.
Beams
Exposed beams add architectural character and natural texture to a room. Ideal for high ceilings, beams bring in a sense of rustic charm and craftsmanship while also connecting the space to organic materials in a simple yet striking way.
Apex Ceilings
A vaulted ceiling with a central apex creates a sense of drama and openness. Adding wood panelling to this feature draws the eye upwards and highlights the architecture of the space.
To enhance this further, painting the sloped ceilings in a vibrant colour, as we did in the Orangery at the Warren Street Hotel, creates a powerful yet playful visual moment.
Painted Ceilings
Painted ceilings can completely transform a room’s atmosphere. At the Bloomsbury Publishing offices, we painted the industrial-style ceiling in a bold blue to bring in energy and a sense of creativity.
At the Kips Bay Showroom, a bright yellow ceiling helped to infuse the space with warmth and joy.
At the Bergdorf Goodman Palette Restaurant, the ceiling was painted to evoke a starry night sky, adding a touch of enchantment to the intimate space.
Lighting
Lighting can be the final layer that completes a ceiling. A chandelier introduces both texture and artistry. Not only does it function as a sculptural element, but it also casts beautiful shadows and highlights texture above, creating depth and enhancing the play of light in the room.
Art Installations
Ceilings can also be transformed with large-scale artwork. In the lobbies of the Ham Yard Hotel and The Whitby Hotel, we commissioned Hermione Skye to create her ‘Loom’ installation. This piece combines traditional weaving with a contemporary aesthetic, adding dramatic texture overhead and completely transforming the spaces.
Ceilings should never be treated as an afterthought. They are a canvas for creativity and an opportunity to bring personality, texture and depth into a room. By embracing the fifth wall, you can elevate a space in the most unexpected and delightful of ways.
