In interior design, it’s all too easy to settle for what’s readily available. But to create something truly distinctive, we’ve learned that sometimes you have to think beyond the marketplace and make it yourself. That’s why, over the years, we’ve developed our own collections with iconic names like Christopher Farr, Spode, Andrew Martin and GP & J Baker. Each collaboration is inspired by a love of art, craft and travel, resulting in designs that tell a story rather than simply fill a space.
There’s something immensely rewarding about bringing a fabric or wallpaper to life from a spark of imagination, whether it’s drawn from a far-flung adventure or a spontaneous sketch. The creative process is rarely linear; it’s more of a winding road with the occasional pothole. But that’s precisely where the magic happens. Great design is about problem-solving with flair. When we hit a creative conundrum, we don’t walk away until we’ve found a solution, or at least a clear path forward. The key is to surround yourself with a tenacious, imaginative team and foster an environment where ideas bounce freely. It’s an art in itself to transform that raw creative energy into something remarkable.
Staying the Course: Advice for Designers
Working in this industry has taught us some invaluable lessons. First and foremost? Don’t take things personally. When a design is questioned or an installation goes off-piste, it’s easy to feel disheartened. But the trick is to dust yourself off and carry on. Even the most perfectly curated schemes encounter snags, the difference between a good designer and a great one is the ability to push through with resolve.
Another golden rule? Trust your instincts. It’s natural to feel a pang of self-doubt when others challenge your direction, but in design, conviction is everything. If you’ve made a bold choice, whether it’s clashing patterns, a daring colour palette, or an unexpected furniture pairing — stick with it. Wavering halfway through a project often leads to diluted results. Confidence, even when you’re unsure, can turn a risky idea into a memorable masterpiece.
A Life Immersed in Design
For us, design isn’t just a profession, it’s a way of life. Working alongside family makes it all the more personal. We’re fortunate to collaborate with people we know and love, which often means conversations around the dinner table drift into colour palettes and fabric schemes, though we do occasionally talk about other things!
And then there’s our four-legged team member. Bringing a dog to work adds a wonderfully grounding touch. There’s nothing quite like a tail-wagging confidante perched in a wing chair, offering unwavering support with every decision. Let’s be honest, a dog always agrees with you, which is more than can be said for clients or contractors! Beyond the charm, having a dog in the studio brings a sense of home to the workspace, a constant reminder that the best interiors feel lived-in and loved.
