Cut-Outs and Collaging

Day to Day

Explore how collaging and cut-outs shape our designs, from dynamic, flowing forms to vivid, striking colours...

Henri Matisse wasn’t just a painter — he was a visionary who saw the world in bold, fluid shapes and vibrant colours. His iconic cut-outs, created in his later years, transformed simple paper and scissors into an entirely new art form. In today’s blog, we’re exploring how cut-outs and collaging have inspired and shaped our designs.

Cut-outs embody movement, with organic shapes that seem to dance across the page. Pierre Frey’s Rangiroa fabric captures this same dynamic energy, which is why we love incorporating it into our interiors. In the Garden Suite at Warren Street Hotel, we featured it on both furniture and curtains, where the abstract, fluid forms in rich, unexpected colours infuse the space with vitality, transforming it into a living, breathing work of art.

We have added appliqué details to the backs of our dining chairs and bar stools, echoing his layered cutpaper technique. These bold accents turn everyday pieces into vibrant, artful statements. We also love the cut-out style of flags, framing them in our interiors to bring dynamic storytelling and a burst of energy to any space.

Our iconic Ozone fabric, designed for Christopher Farr Cloth, remains a favourite! With its bold graphic motif and softly shaded edges, it beautifully blends organic shapes with structured forms, creating a perfect harmony that elevates any space.

Bring a touch of collaging magic into your home with our cut-out cushions — abstract shapes stitched onto soft fabrics for a playful, artful accent. Our High Tide lamps, with their bold motifs and sculptural charm, cast mesmerising shadows that bring movement and depth to any space.

“Creativity takes courage,” as Matisse once said — a reminder that interiors should be bold, joyful and expressive. Whether through upholstery, furniture, or accessories, great design, like great art, knows no boundaries — only endless possibilities.
