Here at our Design Studio, we love paying attention to spaces that are often overlooked. One area we particularly enjoy dressing up is the stair landing. A landing is defined as a platform between a flight of stairs or the platform at the top or bottom of the stairs. It’s a small space that’s perfect for adding a touch of style, whether it’s with a unique chest, a quirky light fixture or a one-of-a-kind mirror. Join us on the blog today as we land in style.
In this residential project, we’ve dressed this bright little stair landing with a table and artwork. In place of a rug, a throw draped over the railing adds warmth, creating a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. What was once a forgotten space has become a vital hub for setting down keys or checking the mirror one last time before heading out.
In the Loft Suite at Covent Garden Hotel, we took the opportunity to bring in storage, mirrors and lighting to the landing at the top of the stairs. It creates a moment to look forward to when you reach the top-level bedroom. Immediately, you’re invited to relax and unwind in these embroidered tub chairs, perfect for curling up with a good book.
At Ham Yard Hotel, an appliqued Kit’s Wing Chair beckons from the stairs near the lift. A few flights down, the landing offers a spot to admire a beloved Alexander Calder tapestry.
At the top of this lovely carpet-wrapped staircase, the window coverings and artwork at the bend invite you to continue your journey upwards. On the landing, natural light pours in, making the space a perfect spot to pause and appreciate the artwork. We love how we’ve used a rug as a runner — showing that even an old, worn item can be reshaped and reused, giving a much-loved piece a whole new lease of life!
At The Whitby Hotel, we adore this landing for its view of the bustling New York City streets, paired with the vibrant energy of Kate Blee’s wallpaper. It’s the perfect transition from the lobby to the lively event spaces below.
Small spaces, when given a little love, often become our favourites. Let us know how you’ve brought attention to your stair landings by tagging us @kitkempdesignthread.
