Ladders In Design

Day to Day

Explore how we’ve creatively incorporated ladders into our designs...

Ladders are not only essential tools in the design process, particularly during installations, but they also carry a symbolic meaning of progress and the journey to success. Today on the blog, we’d like to share how we’ve creatively incorporated ladders into our designs.

A ladder can be the perfect addition to a bookcase, providing easy access to the top shelves filled with cherished books. Beyond their functionality, ladders can also serve as striking design elements. In the Library at Ham Yard Hotel, we’ve transformed a hand-painted, collaged ladder into a dual-purpose piece: a work of art and a lamp, topped with an ikat shade.

At the Whitby Bar, we celebrated Britain’s rich basket-making heritage with an installation that cleverly hangs from a hidden ladder. This allowed us to stagger the baskets, adding layers of dimension and height, creating a visually dynamic display.

In the Drawing Room at Warren Street Hotel, we have a beloved painting by Gary Bunt that features a whimsical scene of home life. Within this charming artwork, a pair of men stand on a ladder reaching for the moon, evoking a sense of aspiration and wonder. This beautifully mirrors our Moon Dog fabric, with the embroidered dog gazing upward. The artwork’s realistic yet playful nature highlights the ladder as a key element, alongside a touching poem that complements the piece.

Ladders aren’t just for people—they’re useful for animals too. On the rooftop at Crosby Street Hotel, a simple ladder gives our resident chickens easy access to their cosy resting spot.

Similarly, a short ladder leads into the shepherd’s hut, providing a convenient step inside for a moment of peace with my lovely pups.

From art installations to practical applications, ladders offer both functionality and inspiration in our designs. We hope this blog has inspired you to add a ladder or two to your designs!
