When it comes to design, context is everything. Whether you find yourself at a Firmdale Hotel in the heart of London or the bustling streets of New York, each space tells a unique story through its design elements and how they come together to complete a space. Join us as we explore how the same design element can take on different personalities across the Atlantic, depending on its context.
Tess Newell Chest | The Soho Hotel or Warren Street Hotel
The Tess Newell Chest in the library at The Soho Hotel exemplifies British sophistication with a whimsical twist. Adorned with intricate hand-painted designs and surrounded by rich wood paneling, the chest brings an air of antiquity and charm.
In contrast, the drawing room at Warren Street Hotel in New York creates a more contemporary backdrop for a similar piece. Here, the Tess Newell Chest sits against red fabric walls adorned with folkloric art. In this new-build hotel, the painted piece grounds the room with a touch of playfulness and whimsy.
Travelling Light | Number Sixteen or The Whitby HotelÂ
In the library at Number Sixteen, our fabric ‘Travelling Light’ is used on the curtains with its Kilim graphic-inspired print. The delicate interplay of natural and colourful motifs complements the room’s light-filled atmosphere, offering a tranquil retreat from the bustling streets of South Kensington.
Across the pond, we have used ‘Travelling Light’ on the walls and columns at the vibrant Whitby Bar in New York City. Layered with bold, dynamic artwork, the space sings with an energetic ambiance, proving the fabric is both beautiful and versatile!
Botero Cat | Charlotte Street Hotel or Crosby Street Hotel
Greeting each guest in the lobby of Charlotte Street Hotel, the Botero Cat sculpture stands as a playful nod to contemporary art within a classic British setting. Its rounded, exaggerated form contrasts with the hotel’s more traditional elements, creating a delightful focal point that adds character and humour to the space. Meanwhile, the Botero Cat at Crosby Street Hotel in New York takes on a more pronounced role. Positioned in the contemporary exterior environment, the sculpture’s bold presence commands attention.
Zig Zag | Warren Street Hotel or Frieze Masters Art Fair
The ‘Zig Zag’ walls in the lobby at Warren Street Hotel are a testament to our love for bold colour and vibrant pattern. The show-stopping design brings energy and movement to the room, juxtaposing wooden furnishings, antique upholstery, and woven basket sculptures.
On the other side of the pond, when the ‘Zig Zag’ is applied to sofas, it offers playful, dynamic seating. It encourages interaction and engagement among the energetic art scene at Frieze Masters London. Be sure to check out our Ham Yard Restaurant and Bar Pop Up at Frieze Masters again this year from October 9 – 13, 2024.
Whether in the historic heart of London or the vibrant streets of New York, we hope you’ve enjoyed exploring the impact that different locations can have on an item. When it comes to design, it’s all about the power of context!
