There’s something enchanting about stepping into a space that feels like a stage, where every detail captivates your senses and ignites your imagination. Much like theatre, interior design has the ability to transport us, evoke emotions, and tell compelling stories. At our Design Studio, we believe that hotels, restaurants, and bars are real-world stages, where we craft interiors that serve as the perfect backdrop for a grand performance. On today’s blog we are looking at how you can infuse a little drama into your spaces.
Proportions and Sightlines
Proportions and sightlines are crucial in creating a theatrical atmosphere, and we expertly use these elements to design spaces that leave a lasting impact. In a bedroom, a signature oversized headboard often takes centre stage, while beds with testers bring an undeniable sense of drama.
Large windows and mirrors manipulate scale, framing views and guiding the eye as if they were part of a carefully orchestrated stage set. These bold proportions ensure every angle offers a visually captivating experience, making each room feel like a scene waiting to unfold.
Lighting Effects
Mood lighting is an art that transforms spaces into intimate, theatrical settings. By selectively dimming some areas and spotlighting others, we create a visual narrative that commands attention like a masterfully directed stage performance. This interplay of light and shadow generates a warm, inviting ambiance where every corner feels like a scene, and each detail stands out. The result is a space that’s both dramatic and cosy, enveloping its occupants in a meticulously curated atmosphere.
Costumes and More
Repurposing costumes as interior design elements adds a theatrical touch to any space. In the Meadow Suite at Crosby Street Hotel, we have an 18th-century silk dress encased in a Perspex box, adorned with dried flowers. In The Orangery at Number Sixteen Hotel, whimsical papier-mâché heads evoke the grandeur of Marie Antoinette’s era. These elements add historical depth and theatrical intrigue, enriching the space with a sense of drama and nostalgia.
Architectural Props
Incorporating oversized architectural details or quirky props can magically transform a space. Drawing inspiration from theatrical sets, even the simplest rooms can be elevated with these dramatic touches. At the Oscar Bar, for example, a grand stone bust of King Edward VII presides over the scene, imbuing the space with regal flair. These whimsical elements, though unconventional, infuse spaces with theatricality, turning everyday settings into their own unique stages.
