Stripes and Squares

Day to Day

Explore the beauty of stripes and squares in design...

The use of simple elements like stripes and squares can transform a design, adding a unique charm and bringing it to life. Sometimes, it’s the simplest things that create the most beauty. On today’s blog post, we are exploring how we have used stripes and squares in our designs.

Stripes

The summer season always revives trendy stripes, especially colourful ones in fabrics. This retro-chic trend inspires designers to bring linear fabrics to the forefront. We love integrating stripes into our designs, starting with our latest GP & J Baker collection. This collection offers an array of striped fabric options with many colour combinations to enhance your designs.

We typically set our stripes vertically, as they help spaces feel taller. For instance, in one of our rooms, we used ‘Wriggle Room’ on the walls. This pattern is not too large and gives the space a calming feel.

Stripes can also add playfulness to furniture. Below, we used our ‘Bunty’ fabric on both a ‘Stuart’ chair and an end of bed stool, while our ‘World’s Apart’ fabric on the sofa adds the perfect finishing touch.

In the Lee Jofa showroom in New York, which we designed using our new GP & J Baker collection, we used the ‘Rainstorm’ fabric as a bedskirt, beautifully tying the room together.

In Room 909 at Warren Street Hotel, we used Mind the Gap’s ‘Szepvis Stripe’ on the walls. This fabric adds a touch of nature to your designs while maintaining a sophisticated appearance.

Squares

Squares often appear unexpectedly in our designs, providing symmetry and sturdiness. When displaying art, squares are valuable as they create balance and symmetry. For example, in the restaurant at Warren Street Hotel, we framed coloured plates in Perspex boxes. This square framing perfectly captures the essence and scale of the art.

At Knightsbridge Hotel, a bold headboard made up of Pierre Frey’s ‘Pachuca’ fabric showcases the power of squares. The geometric blocks and layered diamond shape add dimension and colour to the space.

A simple way to incorporate squares into your décor is through the finishing touches. A sofa or chair isn’t complete without a cushion, so choose a playful fabric that seamlessly ties the room’s colours together.

We hoped you’ve enjoyed looking at how stripes and squares can add life to your designs!
