Turning Objects into Lamps

Day to Day

Discover how we've transformed simple found objects from flea markets into the most original and unique lamps...

When designing a room, many factors come into play, but some of the most enjoyable aspects are the finer design details. A room’s accents, accessories, and final flourishes are key to good design. These elements accentuate and elevate a space, creating moments of intrigue, excitement, and inspiration. Join us this week as we show you how we’ve transformed simple found objects from flea markets into the most original and unique lamps.

Balustrade Moulding

Several years ago, we discovered a huge collection of balustrade mouldings that instantly caught our attention. Each moulding was unique, making them already intriguing. We turned them all into lamps, creating functional pieces of art throughout Warren Street Hotel. In this one-bedroom suite, the rough wooden material against the elegant seagrass wallpaper adds layers of interest and depth to the space. The balustrade design bridges architecture and our passion for interiors, providing this elegant room with an element of weight and sturdiness.

Ceramic Dog

At our Design Studio, we have a soft spot for animals. One way to pay homage to our furry friends is by incorporating them into table lamp designs. You can find many dog-inspired lamps throughout our spaces. We loved turning these Staffordshire dog figurines into playful lamps. We chose a ruffled lampshade, to add a special feminine touch.

A variation of this can be found here on Shop Kit Kemp, where the doggy lamp is paired with a linen lampshade featuring chain stitch detail.

Bowling Pin

At Ham Yard Hotel, our Croc Bowling Alley is a unique space full of joy and quirkiness. With large floor-to-ceiling Howard Hodgkin artworks and a collection of vintage bowling shoes, we even turned antique bowling pins into table lamps!

Wooden Boot

Nestled in a secluded corner of my garden, under a thick thatched roof, is my Shepherd’s Hut. Inside, it is completely hand-painted by our dear friend Melissa White. Often overlooked is an old wooden boot last I found at Kempton Market in London. We loved it so much we had it turned into a lamp, and now it sits purposefully on this little antique desk!

Bottle Dispenser

Traveling is a great way to find objects. Flea markets offer a wide range of curiosities to play with. It’s just a matter of getting creative to turn everyday objects into artworks with a purpose. We transformed two bottle dispensers into lamps that now help light up The Potting Shed Restaurant at Dorset Square Hotel. Here, they sit atop an antique wooden chest, given a second lease on life!

We hope this blog post inspires you to get creative with old everyday objects and turn them into lamps that will instantly add character, humour, and intrigue to your interior.
