When it comes to iconic furniture, the ‘Chesterfield’ sofa stands out as a quintessential piece exuding elegance, tradition, and timeless appeal. Today we are exploring how we have used this sophisticated piece in our designs.
Known for its deep button tufting, rolled arms, and equal back and arm height, the Chesterfield has been a staple in sophisticated interiors for centuries. The Chesterfield sofa is believed to have originated in the 18th century, commissioned by Lord Philip Stanhope, the Earl of Chesterfield. He sought a piece of furniture that would allow gentlemen to sit upright without wrinkling their suits. The result was the Chesterfield sofa, a symbol of British sophistication and refinement.
As a large and comfortable sofa, the Chesterfield is an excellent place to showcase the focal fabric of your room scheme. A bright and colourful Chesterfield can command attention and set the tone for the entire room.
At our Design Studio, we blend the traditional with the contemporary, reimagining the Chesterfield sofa with bold and colourful fabrics instead of the traditional leather upholstery. We opt for vivid, unconventional patterns, geometrics, and florals.
In the Soho Residence at The Soho Hotel in London, we have upholstered our Chesterfield sofas in the wonderful fabric ‘Nomad’ by Ellen Merchant. Rich in history and timeless design, the Chesterfield sofa remains one of our beloved pieces of furniture. By upholstering this classic design in vibrant fabrics, the Chesterfield becomes an eclectic centerpiece that can transform any room.
We hope you’ve enjoyed taking a closer look at the beloved Chesterfield Sofa.
