At our Design Studio we get so many ideas from our travels. Australia has always been a place of inspiration with its vast landscapes, unusual vegetation and wildlife, so it was a delight when we were recently mentioned on Australia’s design show ‘The Block’. To celebrate, we thought we’d share some of our favourite creatives from down-under who share our enthusiasm for all things colour and pattern.
Tigger Hall
Our dear friend Tigger Hall, Founder and Designer of Nine Muses Textiles, creates whimsical and eclectic patterns that reimagines tradition and brings to life dreamy botanicals with her artistic flair. We adore her organic approach and soothing colour palettes. We’ve used her work for our headboards and signature Firmdale mannequins.
You’ll also find EDIT’s textiles in the Drawing Room at Charlotte Street Hotel.
Graham Fransella
Graham Fransella is one of our favourite abstract and figurative artists whose bold and powerful artworks command any space. His strong black strokes and layered approach revel in the presence and absence of the human condition and reflects richness and depth. We display his work with pride at Covent Garden Hotel, Charlotte Street Hotel and The Whitby Hotel. These pieces are showstoppers!
EDIT Textiles
EDIT Textiles is based in Sydney and their bright and bold patterns capture a sense of playfulness and fun. We love their hand painted designs which are printed on the finest Belgian linen. These high performance fabrics are perfect for commercial and residential interiors. We’ve recently used their floral print ‘Vanessa Bloom’ in Room 803 at The Whitby Hotel. This invokes the spirit of the Bloomsbury Group. We are obsessed with its painterly strokes and this has to be one of our all-time favourite fabric designs.
Walter G
Boutique studio Walter G is the creation of best friends Lauren Emerson and Genevieve Hewson whose passion for joyful patterns and traditional printmaking is evident in their designs. We love the gentle mix of geometric and botanical prints that add the right amount of whimsy into a space. One of their designs adorns the walls at a recent residential project, adding an element of texture and fun.
Dinosaur Designs
Louise Olsen and Steve Ormandy are the creatives behind the iconic Dinosaur Designs, whose bold resin sculptural objects bridge the gap between colour and form. We’re in awe of their versatility and beauty. In our Drawing Room at Ham Yard Hotel, the ‘Liquid Moon’ table harmoniously fuses the organic and the ultramodern. Dinosaur Designs’ London flagship store resides within Ham Yard Village, so be sure to stop by on your next visit.
Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery
Sourcing art is integral to our process and is one of our favourite things to do. We love working with Rebecca Hosack from Rebecca Hossack Art Gallery who celebrates non-western traditions, being one of the first galleries who exhibited Aboriginal paintings in Europe. Rebecca’s innovation, sense of diversity and wealth of knowledge is inspiring. She represents Dutch artist Carla Kranendonk whose works are captivating, bold and powerful. Her painting here at The Soho Hotel makes our Sandra Blow event room feel so majestic!
Anna Spiro
Anna Spiro is an incredible colourist. Her innate ability to create such dreamy patterns that burst with a sense of playfulness is a breath of fresh air. We are currently scheming for our upcoming hotel at Warren Street in Tribeca, New York and we are proud to be incorporating her fabrics.
Although oceans apart, we are always in awe of what captures the imagination of our Australian friends. We’re even luckier to have some Aussies as part of our Design Studio and within our hotels. We hope you have been inspired by the creativity and fun of these designs.
