Creating our Mythical Creatures
CollaborationsMythical Creatures is a timeless design, one that you discover more from each time you look at it. I don’t know anyone else other that Chelsea Textiles, who is able to colour and hand embroider the intricate detail of the mythical creatures we designed nestled in their contemporary take on a tree of life...
I love working with Jenny Simpson because her knowledge of hand embroidery, cloth and colour is exceptional.
It is a free flowing design, requiring complicated hand embroidery, which is why the creatures need breathing space to allow them to be appreciated for their individual character. We chose a fresh linen cloth for the base, which make the colourful threads really sing. My favourite has to be the flying antelope with a plume of pink mane.
Over time we have added more creatures, such as this little fellow with a golden top knot. He glistens at the bottom of a butter dish, as part of my Mythical Creatures dinner service set for Wedgwood.
When designing the tea set for Wedgwood, I deconstructed the tree of life even more. Concentrating on the mythical creatures, we made them work around the 3D shape of the china by adding sprigs and making them feel at home in the wild, rather than floating in mid-space.
A pair of mugs in our bespoke gift box makes a lovely present…
Our takeaway coffee cups wrapped in our Mythical Creatures design have been a big hit over the last year, allowing people to have their drinks from Ham Yard’s coffee shop outside.
It is not only vital that our designs are beautiful, they have to be ecologically sound. Sustainable design is important to us as a company. These eco-friendly, disposable cups are made using plant-based materials and are fully compostable.
Building on this success, we are working on a new reusable coffee cup which will soon be available on Shop Kit Kemp.
I have reconfigured the Mythical Creatures design to work around the coffee cup. What I love about this design is that it doesn’t look overworked, it retains its natural organic quality, enveloping the shape.
The sustainable design does not compromise on the taste. Frank Green explained that their innovative ceramic inner layer and stainless steel outer layer reusable cup or bottle is about creating a pure flavour and aroma experience. It’s triple-walled and vacuum insulated for the ultimate temperature control to keep beverages hot or cold for hours. Sounds good to us! We will let you know as soon as they are available.
