I first created Mythical Creatures as a fabric design, to be hand embroidered by Chelsea Textiles. The original inspiration came from an 18th century Chinese embroidered textile which I found in an antique shop in Covent Garden.
We hand painted and adapted all those imaginary creatures giving them a little twist, and we also added new ones, creating our unique family of creatures.
These romantic and fascinating mythical creatures provided a perfect backdrop for decorating the tea and dinner services we designed for Wedgwood. It was exciting to travel by train from London to Stoke on Trent to perfect the designs and colours at their factory.
Wedgwood was founded in 1759. They have since been creating the finest china, with extraordinary design and craftsmanship, dressing dining tables with the most stunning tableware. It makes me very happy to think of someone around the world drinking their tea in our Mythical Creatures set, even at the Bujera Fort in Rajasthan, India.
What makes it unique is the combination of classic elements in a more contemporary style.
The Mythical Creatures dinner service is used throughout our hotels in London and New York. The cups are edged with a gold motif, drawn by hand on each piece.
Different mythical creatures grace plates, cups and saucers, there’s even a little fish at the bottom of the milk jug, a sweet surprise to find when you are finishing your tea!
