Out and About: A Weekly Round Up

London Craft Week has been in full swing and with the town becoming a hive of creative activity, we went ‘Out and About’ and made many exciting discoveries. Here’s what we got up to this week…

Meet the Makers Behind London’s Heritage at The Soho Hotel

On Monday, we hosted Heritage of London Trust (HOLT) at The Soho Hotel where Kit joined Director of HOLT, Dr Nicola Stacey for a series of unique ‘in conversation’ talks. The event celebrated three talented craftspeople who are all helping to restore London’s lost heritage whilst honouring the fascinating histories of each site.

The day began with Peter Campling who taught us about stained glass restoration, followed by Sue Lee who demonstrated the art of gilding. Concluding the talks was Isabella Gilding, who spoke about model-making. We were fascinated to learn about the intricacies of model making and how Isabella is combining traditional techniques with technological innovations to create her work. Just look at the detail of this model’s façade!

Meet the Maker at the Chelsea Textiles Pimlico Showroom

We watched skilled craftspeople who were stitching a loom with beautiful hand embroidered textiles at Chelsea Textiles’ showroom. Seeing the work being carried out is always a reminder of the dedication required to work with this fabric.

The Art of Collecting at The Surprise pub, Chelsea

On Tuesday we joined Minnie Kemp and Isabella Worsley at The Surprise pub in Chelsea. They came together in conversation to discuss ‘The Art of Collecting’. Chaired by Firmdale Hotels’ art ambassador Olivia Paterson, they talked about how to build art collections from multiple points of view.

Ed Burkes at a Pop-up Exhibition

We love a good pop-up and this week London was swimming with them! We discovered some of Ed Burkes’ colourful paintings at a pop-up exhibition near to our Design Studio. What a great selection of works to stumble upon – he is definitely one to watch.

Marcantonio Brandolini d’Adda exhibition at PATERSON ZEVI

It was the last week to see Marcantonio Brandolini d’Adda’s beautiful blown glass exhibition at PATERSON ZEVI gallery on Davies Street, London. These close-up shots show the sumptuous colours and rich textures of his work.

Here’s to many more art discoveries and creative conversations. If you’d like to discover some more art, come ‘Out and About’ with us and join one of our upcoming Firmdale Art Walks in London or New York
